New Rules on Amberjack & Triggerfish

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries Service) published a final rule implementing the approved regulatory actions to end overfishing and rebuild greater amberjack and gray triggerfish in the Gulf of Mexico. The rule becomes effective August 4, 2008.

This rule increases the recreational minimum size limit for Amberjack from 28 inches to 30 inches fork length (FL) and sets the size limit to 14 inches  fork length (FL) for Gray Triggerfish.

Reminder on Circle Hooks

Effective Jan. 1, 2008, billfish tournament participants in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Caribbean who use natural bait or natural bait and artificial lure combinations will be limited to using only non-offset circle hooks. This new regulation is part of a larger rule finalized by NOAA Fisheries Service for the conservation of Atlantic highly migratory species – billfish, tunas, swordfish and sharks. Tournament participants who use artificial lures may continue using the traditional J-style fishing hooks since there is a high survival rate for fish that are caught and thrown back using this fishing method.  To avoid any confusion, NMFS has confirmed that this law applies to each CCBGFC tournament, and to the the Texas Grand Slam.

Our weighsheets have been updated accordingly and members are encouraged to used the new ones.

WEIGHSHEET

Non-stainless steel circle hooks are required, along with venting tools and dehooking devices when angling for reef fish.  For details see Southeast Fishery Bulletin FB08-030

Announcing New Award Categories

New for 2008!  In order to recognize the team work required of the crews in order to be successful at big game fishing, awards will be presented to the 4-person teams of the top ten boats for all bluewater species, and to the 4-person teams of the top three boats for non-billfish species.

These new award categories will replace a few awards that have
historically gone unclaimed.  Please see the RULES page for species that are eligible for award recognition this year.

Also new in 2008 is eliminating the need to visit two weighstations during concurrent tournaments.  The scorekeeper will accept official
weighsheets from either the CCBGFC weighmaster or from the concurrent tournament weighmaster.  Please see the RULES page for details.
